How much does age really play into a relationship? Can a couple with 10+ years between them really have that much in common?
I've been in two serious relationships in my life, both of which were with someone no more than one year older than me. I know thirty years ago, it may have been more common to marry someone that was a significant number of years old than you, but what about today?
The other night, I encountered something that is very different for me. Where I'm from, there aren't many "eligible bachelor's," so when I was approached by a customer at the restaurant where I work, I was a little caught off guard. This guy is somewhat of a regular at Sam's, I had seen him before, but I didn't know any details about him, nor had we ever had a conversation. While grabbing drinks for one of my tables, the guy came over, introduced himself, shook my hand and gave me a note with his phone number on it.
To make a long story short...the next day when I spoke with him over the phone, I found out that he was not 25 or 26 like all of the other waitresses thought...He was 34 years old, a good 13 years older than me! Though he seemed really nice, and I was honored that he wanted to get to know me, the 13 year age difference got me thinking and turned me off a bit. I thought it over, and decided it was best not to get involved. It isn't that 34 is super old, it's just a lot older than me. I feel like someone in their mid-thirties is at a very different stage of their life, than someone that's fresh out of college, and has yet to experience it.
Thankfully, the situation was handled and no harm was done, but it got me thinking! What are the rules on dating someone that's more than just a few years older or younger than you? Is it accepted/looked down upon?
What do you think?

I think an age difference like that doesn't matter as much when you get older. But like you said, he's at a very different stage of life than you are. I think you made a wise decision :)

For some reason people that are significantly older than me are the only people that ever hit on me. I dont know why but I have had many experiences with men in their 30's and even 40's hitting on me and I'm fresh out of college like you. I'm like you I just feel like we are different stages of life and wouldnt have a whole lot in common. I think once you hit 30 dating someone 10 or more years older than you is ok but not in your 20's.
You guys are at very different stages. I agree. My close friend is engaged to someone who is 17 years older..but she has always been a very mature person and she is all set in her career..so even though she is 29 and he is 46..you can't tell the age gap because they are both at the same level in their careers. I have talked to men who were in their 30's when I was in college...and in the beginning it is fun...but then you realize you don't have the same priorities.
